In Neil's review, he found that the Windows version of LastPass was able to capture and manage some application passwords, which isn't true in OS X. Max was also annoyed that the app seemed to have a lag issue when saving changes to an entry, making editing a chore. It can't, for instance, let you change identities-that is, high-level groups of folders and entries. The Mac app has some other limitations as well. In fact, just about every feature of the LastPass website, including its voluminous Settings options and the security-challenge test, is accessible from within the browser plugin. The plugins also provide easy access to your vault from a pull-down menu, letting you create and edit entries in handy pop-up windows. It also captures your username and password when you log in to sites where you already have an account, including sites whose login process extends over two pages-like most banks. Through its browser plugin, LastPass automatically detects when you're creating a new login for a website, and it offers to generate a new password every time. Please read Neil's review of LastPass for a full evaluation of LastPass' service, the major points of which we'll summarize here. That's handy, but most apps that require a login also require an Internet connection.Ĭompared to the website, or even the LastPass browser plugin, LastPass for Mac interfaces with only a few of the services' features. Though Max would prefer to have universal access from a right click or integration with Spotlight, this is still a valuable feature for OS X users.Īnother notable feature is that LastPass for Mac lets you browse your LastPass vault even when your computer is offline. From this search box, you can launch or copy passwords, giving you fast access to your logins just about anywhere. Once invoked, a search box appears in the middle of the screen, much like Yosemite handles Spotlight searches. The app's unique feature is a universal keyboard shortcut (Command+Shift+L) to search your passwords. Also, LastPass for Mac neither captures login information nor replays saved logins for OS X apps. This last option is critical, because OS X does not support LastPass as universal alt-click option. Hover over any website entry and you'll see buttons to launch your default browser and automatically log in, or copy the password. On an entry, you can select the folder or type in a new one. Most sections are broken into folders, which let you better organize your entries. Clicking any of these brings the appropriate section into view. The last of these is a test that rates your overall password security, and it calls out any weak passwords you might have saved, or duplicate passwords in your collection. The app's left rail shows your saved sites, secure notes, form fills, favorites, and security challenge. Creating entries is a snap, and the Mac app includes settings for password length and advanced features like length, character type, and even pronounceability. Desktop LastPass has a simple, single-window interface with a search bar across the top and an Add button in the upper right, for creating new entries for sites, notes, and Web forms. This is a great feature for those who are just getting started with the service. This not only installs the LastPass plugin for Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Safari, but it also imports saved passwords from those browsers as well and loads them into LastPass. Next, the Mac app prompted us to download the Mac OS browser installer. Best Hosted Endpoint Protection and Security Software.
